Is it possible to force dos not to maximize?

It all depends what you mean by DOS.
Pressing ALT-ENTER will make some DOS programs display in a window. This key combination will toggle back and forth. Does not work on all DOS programs, many games for example will not toggle like this.
If you are starting a DOS program from in icon, you can change the properties of the icon to tell the program to open in a window.
