When you run a game in full screen mode it is probably causing all other apps to go idle - in effect Windows is no longer multi-tasking. Therefore you won't be able to run automation software to control the game. You'd need to leave the game running in Windowed mode so that other apps can work alongside it.

When you get a black image instead of the screen that usually indicates the app is working in a different security context. But the issue could be something else here and I have no idea I'm afraid. Does the game require elevation when you start it? The game could even be preventing it. Are you able to take a screenshot of the game manually?
