Getting dynamic IP address

Post by tscottme » Wed May 05, 2004 1:06 pm

Can someone tell me how to get my current public IP address as simply as possible? There are web sites like http://www.ipchicken.com and others that will show me my current IP address, but I need a way that I can use in a script. I have a cable modem with dynamic IP addresses and need a reliable way to know what my current IP address is before running a script. I plan on having my PC send me a text message with the IP address so I can access my PC remotely.

Isn't there a DOS command I can run from the command line that will return the IP address.

Thanks for any help.

Text - to - SMS 8)

sending messages as SMS to the cellular phone;
easy sending messages as SMS;
sending messages from command line;
sending messages from command files;
sending messages about system events;
sending messages as SMS to more then one recipient;
sending messages as SMS to groups of recipients;
sending files as SMS with splitting;
sending files as SMS in few mouse clicks.

Maybe limited functionality in this freeware version [Download...]

thanks for the Text2SMS idea. I'll have to try it. I tried IPCONFIG but it seems to return my local IP address (192.x.x.x) and I am looking for the IP address assigned by my ISP. I think Comcast uses dynamic IP addresses and I don't know how frequently the IP address I have now will change.

My plan is to have my PC SMS the IP address to me in case I need to use a particular remote desktop program. That program requires me to know that IP to access my desktop.

If you don't want to go to a website (here's one with a very simple interface http://checkip.dyndns.org:8245/) you should be able get it by querying your router.

FlatServer [Download]

FlatServer is connecting via DialUpNetwork and detects the IP which has been assigned by your ISP. With this IP all occurences of %IP% in the file ip.htm will be replaced and saved as upload.htm. The content is a recommendation for a redirection and can be changed if you like it. The file upload.htm will be uploaded via FTP to the named domain, with an assigned filename, by default as index.html.

FlatServer will track if the connection will be closed. If that happens, it tries immediately to reconnect (if you want, there's a option for scheduling as well). If that could be done successfully that game starts again ...

HTTPRequest>http://ipdetect.dnspark.com,,GET,,HTMLResponse

Now you've to extract the IP from the variable "HTMLResponse"
